Task Board

We are good at following our Task Board in Reading and Writing, so we know which activity to do next.

Monarch Butterfly

We have been watching the chrysalis change in colour. First it was green and after the weekend it turned black. We could see the butterfly's wings inside the chrysalis. We knew the butterfly was going to come out soon!
We were lucky because we actually saw the butterfly emerge. It rested afterwards and waited for its wings to dry.
Then Mrs Forsyth put the butterfly outside on a bush in the sun.

We set the monarch butterfly free

How to help your child read at home

Praise is really important in encouraging a child to read. Some children need a lot of practice and encouragement, and some feel discouraged easily. Try to keep reading sessions positive. If necessary, remind your child about things that they are good at, but have had to practice to get better.
All children learn differently. Some children need to slow down when they read, as they may be good at spotting the first letter of words and then guessing what the word says. Others need to worry less about mistakes and read all the way through the story. Early readers often rely heavily on the picture to help them to read the words – this is a valuable way for the children to make meaning.
If your child gets stuck the best way to help is to pause, prompt, and then praise.
Pause/
Wait a few seconds and give them time to think. Often they will work it out.
Prompt
If they still don’t know the word offer the following prompts:
Look at the beginning of the word and make the first sound with your mouth
Check if there are chunks/smaller words that you know within the word
Look for clues in the pictures
  What would make sense?
Go back to the beginning of the sentence
Read on to the end of the sentence
Does it look like another word you know?
Praise,
If they still don’t know, tell them. Then ask them to read the sentence again.
Praise your child

BEACH TRIP

Save the Date! On Monday the 10th March we will be visiting the rock pools off Larsen Street at Cape Foulwind. We will leave school at 10am and return to school at 2:30pm. We will be needing parent help for supervision, so if you are able to join us that would be fantastic!

We love our iPads

Room 7 kids love learning using iPads!

Principal Awards

Two children from Room 7 received "Principal Awards" at assembly on Friday.

Look at our awesome artwork!

We have been learning to draw our portrait.
First we practiced drawing where we thought our eyes, nose, ears and mouth went.
Then we studied our friends faces and talked about the position that their eyes, ears, nose and mouth were in.
Next, we drew another portrait and we thought carefully about where the facial features should go.

We are very proud of our portraits!

First Day Back

First Day Back At School

Today was our first day back at school for 2014 and Room 7 had a great day! The sun was shining and the children were excited to be back with their friends and keen to be in their new classroom.
We met our new classmates and our new teachers. Also, we shared our news and wrote a story about something we did in the holidays.
Here are some photos of our first day.
