A Special Visitor

Today we were really privileged to have Joseph Sullivan come and visit us with his gold medal.  Joe won his gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with his rowing partner Nathan Cohen in the double sculls.  They rowed an amazing race to come from dead last to win it and were nicknamed the hobbits by other athletes because they were from NZ and were so short compared to the other rowers.  One great piece of advice that Joe told us was that you should never let anyone tell you that you can't do something because if you really want to do it, you should give it your best any way.

Dawn McMillan - Authour

We were so lucky to have a real author come and visit our class in the last week of term.  Her name is Dawn McMillan and she has written A LOT of children's books.  She read us some of her books including... Doctor Grundy's Undies and I Need A New Bum!

Silver Fern Railcar

Yesterday we went to see the Silver Fern Railcar arrive in Westport.  We were told it would arrive at 11.00am but it was running late and arrived around 12.20 pm.

All Black Visit

We were so lucky to have a visit by three All Blacks last week.  We dressed up in black and gave them a big friendly welcome.  Our school Kapa Haka did an amazing Haka and we had a quiz.  The South school team won the quiz but the All Blacks won the line out competition!!

Week 3 Winners

Well done Nataleigh and Tom who were the winners of our Principal's Awards this week.

Mmmmm Butter!!!

As part of our Science unit on Marvellous Milk we made butter and observed the changes that happen when the cream is turned into butter. We made the butter by half filling a jar with cream and shaking it till it split into butter and whey.  We also looked at how to speed up the process and put marbles in one of the jars to see if it made a difference - and it did! The marbles churned the butter faster than shaking alone.

Once we had strained and shaped the butter we tested and observed the changes in it by using our senses - sight, smell, feel and TASTE!!!!! Yum, our butter was delicious spread on wine biscuits.  We also shared them with Rooms 5 & 6 , Anne-Marie and Mrs Duston :-)

Moving Milk

On Thursday we did a science experiment called moving milk.  We put food colouring into a shallow dish of milk and observed what happened when we added a drop of dishwashing detergent.  It was exciting watching the colours move and swirl around.
